Engineering channels: atomic biology.
نویسنده
چکیده
I on channels are protein valves that control an enormous range of biological function. Atomic-scale properties of channel proteins control macroscopic flows across otherwise insulating membranes of cells and subcellular compartments, and so the study of channels is a study in atomic biology. Ion channels are intrinsically multiscale devices that allow the amino acid side chains of a protein to control nerve signaling and coordinate muscle contraction—including the contraction that allows the heart to pump blood—and a host of other biological activities. A Google search for ‘‘ion channels’’ or ‘‘channelopathy’’ (1) shows the enormous importance of channels in biology and medicine.

3rd International conference on structure, dynamics and function of proteins in biological membranes.
The conference was arranged for the third time and consisted of lectures given by the leading researchers in membrane proteins field as well as poster session. The topics of the conference covered the structure and function of ion channels, electron transfer proteins, transporters, receptors, and aquaporins. Such proteins were described at the atomic level, as well as in the context of the nati...
متن کاملIon channels: A first view of K+ channels in atomic glory
Crystal structures have been solved for the transbilayer pore domain of a bacterial K+ channel and the tetramerisation domain of voltage-gated K+ channel. These provide our first real structural insights into possible mechanisms of ion selectivity and permeation for K+ channels.
متن کاملThe influence of lipids on voltage-gated ion channels.
Voltage-gated ion channels are responsible for transmitting electrochemical signals in both excitable and non-excitable cells. Structural studies of voltage-gated potassium and sodium channels by X-ray crystallography have revealed atomic details on their voltage-sensor domains (VSDs) and pore domains, and were put in context of disparate mechanistic views on the voltage-driven conformational c...
متن کاملREPORT: COST-STSM-TD1002-11449 Dynamics of Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated Channels by High-Speed Atomic Force Microscopy
Ion channels are membrane proteins facilitating ion fluxes across cell membranes, thereby regulating signal pathways for various physiological processes. The activity of ion channels can be triggered by the interaction with secondary messenger molecules and transmit this information into an electrical response by permeation of ions. Important members of this family are cyclic-nucleotide (cN) mo...
متن کاملFinite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy
The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...
